What a Find! George Washington's Boyhood Home

by mornin77 @ 2008-07-04 - 05:36:36

Archeologists are thrilled to have finally found, the boyhood home, of the first President of the United States, General George Washington. The dig took place in Virginia, after several dead ends and seven years of trying to find the site, they finally struck gold, so to speak. The George Washington Foundation's spokesperson, said that they hope to fill in many holes, in the first president's history. They are
very excited by the discovery.
So far, they have unearthed many, many artifacts, including pieces of ceramics, kettle fragments, toothbrush handles, pottery and hair rollers or rods, used for the stately wigs worn during that time.
They located the area where the Washington families' fireplace stood. They are still searching for the dairy house and the smoke house.
It is thought that the surrounding landscape, holds many answers to the president's attributes and his roots.
It is believed that Washington lived in this particular house, from the ages of six years to the age of twenty, from 1738 to 1752.
So far, they have not found the hatchet, that Washington supposedly used to chop down the infamous cherry tree.
They will continue to scour the dig, to uncover more and more, historical information, that will be of great interest to many people.

A great find. Still wondering how/why it became burried in only a few hundred years. Was it by chance or deliberate?

...Hi there Skipper & Mrs., I can only guess, my sister is the historian in the family. But I think it was nature, looking at the pictures of them digging out the artifacts, the ceramics, and pottery bits were all embedded in dirt and broken up naturally, and the whole place was far below ground. If someone covered it up with dirt, I think they would have found the place more intact, as if it was buried under a mound of dirt. If they had bulldozed it, they probably would have taken the whole crushed thing, to a trash mound and constructed a new house on the property, nothing was there, but grass and dirt. And with the remains of the home, well below ground, so the earth probably shifted and the home deteriorated, with the rain and wind, and sunk below the earth's surface, piece by piece. The smoke house and the dairy house are thought to be, somewhere on the property as well. It is so very fascinating to hear about it. It also makes you wonder what other historical homes of interesting people in the past, are below the earth's surface waiting to be excavated. I am sure there are old coins shrewn around as well, or waiting to be found in a treasure chest of sorts. :o) Be well, both of you. Thanks for your comment.
