In the midst of a transition of presidential power in the United States and an election in Israel, the leaders in Israel have declared an all out war on Hamas, and say that it will be a long time before it ends. The intention, it is reported is to totally cripple Hamas, so that Hamas is ineffective in the least and total destroyed at best. Hamas is still sending rockets into Israel, reportedly, and Israel has dropped some 300 bombs on the area occupied by Hamas in the Gaza strip since the weekend. At least 1,400 Palestanians have been wounded, and over 300 have been killed. The nine hospitals in the area`are reported to be overwhelmed, and without sufficient medical supplies to take care of the wounded. President Bush stands by israel's right to defend itself and says that in order to stop the violence, Hamas must cease sending rockets into Israel. Reports are that no one has been killed in Israel. Israel troops are assembling at the border of Gaza, and are said to be considering a ground invasion in the area. Former Secretary of Defense Richard Cohen, from the Clinton administration, thinks that Israel should think long and hard before they decide to invade on the ground. It may be a harder task than they think, and could increase Hamas' influence. President-elect Obama has deferred to President Bush, saying that President Bush speaks for the United States, until January 20. The Arab population is riled up, over the bombings by Israel, and are protesting around the world, including Yehmen and Lebanon, and in the United States.
