President Barack Obama presented an outline for his plan to
deal with the Afghanistan/Pakistan problem. H sees the two regions as joined. If we cannot solve the problems in Pakistan, with the factions warring against the United States and the Paistan Govrernment, to the point that the Pakistan Government may not stand, our efforts in Afghanistan may be for naught. The President said that he wanted to send an additional four thousand troops along with the seventeen thousand already approved by the Bush Administration last year. The four thousand troops will be
training the Afghans. There will be nine hundred civilians who will be sent to assist in the country's construction as well. The military will be trying to peel off the good Taliban in Afghanistan,it will be harder, because no one knows them nor where they are located. So far there has not been a massive shift to the USby these people.
President Obama also said that there will be benchmarks to measure the progress in the region. Ambassador Richard Holbrooke will be the special envoy for both of the regions.
