  • Madoff Verdict: 150 Years in Prison!

Today in court, a Judge said that what Bernard Madoff did, scamming billions of dollars from unsuspecting investors, in a Ponzi scheme, was "extra-ordinarily evil". He then proceeded to sentence Mr. Madoff to the maximum sentence that could be imposed on a convicted person. At Mr. Madoff's age, this is in essence a death sentence. The Defense had asked for a twelve year sentence for their client. The Madoff's have also been ordered to turn over their assets to the court, and the government will auction them off. Eleven of his victims spoke at the sentencing.

No plans were announced for a memorial service as yet for the super star.
Time magazine will honor Mr. Jackson with a commemorative issue.

The Supreme Court decided today to reverse the lower court decision involving Judge Sonia Sotomayor in the New Haven Connecticut "Ricci" case. The case involved a test for firefighters where the white firefighters passed and all the black firefighters failed, the test was thrown out and the white firefighters were not promoted, they sued. The case was said to have reverse discrimination overtones. More to the point, some law scholars thought the case under Title 7, reflected "discrimination in practice", which is why the lower court through ruled against the white firefighters. It should be noted that there were black firefighters who had passed previous tests and were promoted, this was a new test.

  • Michael Jackson: Suffers Fatal Cardiac Arrest!

The self-described "King of Pop", Michael Joseph Jackson, has died suddenly at the age of 50. The boy genius, collapsed at his home, after having complained of not feeling well the night before, according to reports. A doctor who lived with Mr. Jackson had reportedly given him a shot of Demerol. There were reports, by an attorney, friend of the family
that Michael had an addiction to prescription drugs, and that he had warned of just this kind of thing happening to Michael. The attorney, Brian Oxman said he would wait for the medical examiner's report. There was a 911 call, which was acted on immediately, when the paraedics arrived at the house, Michael reportedly was not breathing. He was transported by ambulance to the hospital, where according to Michael's brother Jermaine, a team of doctors worked on him for an hour, trying to revive him. It is reported that he was in full cardiac arrest. Michael Jackson was pronounced dead at approximately 2:26 PT, it has not been confirmed but many believe he never regained consciousness. The body was transported by helicopter, then by van to the Los Angeles coroner's office. An autopsy to be performed on Friday. According to reports the police are treating it as an investigation into a death, not a homicide. The BMW of the doctor who lived at house, was towed away by the police. The doctor has not been located and is being searched for by the police, as a part of their questioning process in the investigation. Michael Jackson will be remembered hopefully, for his great music which transcended racial and age lines, and reached people all over the world. His album "Thriller" sold more copies than any album in music history. Michael Jackson was a gifted but troubled soul, who died in a tragic way. God bless his family, friends and all those who cared about hi as a human being. The world will miss this talented person, who left with seemingly more of his gift to share. His scheduled London tour, with 50 events, was completely sold out. Reportedly he was then to go on a world tour. Reports are that Michael had undergone a four hour physical examination, which showed no problems. He was also reportedly receiving a daily shot of a morphine-like pain killer. The Wall Street Journal reported that Michael was one-half billion dollars in debt.

We remember her starring role in "The Burning Bed" which was an
amazing story. O'Neal and Ms Fawcett had a son together. She will be sorely missed by her family, friends and all of her fans. She will always be known as a fighter, and a very kind hearted woman.

  • Governor Sanford: My Heart is in Argentina?

Another one bites the dust! South Carolina's Governor Mark Sanford has announced that he had an affair with an Argentina woman who he has know for eight years. The Governor said the affair only started one year ago. Governor Sanford disappeared for five days, without telling anyone exactly where he was going, not the Lt. Governor nor his wife. His wife, when questioned said she didn't know where he was, and the last part of the statement was revealed today, "and that she didn't care". A formal statement from the Governor's wife said that she had asked the Governor to leave and not to talk to her, ten days prior to his revelation. Today in a written statement she indicated that she would be willing to forgive him completely as long as he would work with humility to, in essence repair the relationship. She had agreed to a trial separation, ans she also said she loved her husband and that she believed he had earned the right to try to resurrect their marriage. That was prior to three e-mails being released by the State newspaper of South Carolina, which had held the e-mails for any months, without publishing them. Today a reporter for the newspaper said, after she encountered the Governor arriving by plane from Argentina, that they informed the Governor that the e-mails, which the paper received from an anonymous source would be published. The e-mail were between the woman named Maria and the Governor which go into details about hips and kisses, love and happiness with being close to one another. For further details search the internet. The Governor said the affair started over innocent e-mails. Sad times for the children and the innocent spouses in these circumstances. Hypocrisy also raises its head again as Governor Sanford verbally accused Bill Clinton of lying about his affair and calling into question his honesty with everything else. There is also a question of whether or not Governor Sanford used taxpayer money to pay for his trips to Argentina, reportedly this is not the first of those trips. My thought, it is nobodies business who you share your bed with, just remember, if you serve in a public venue, and are married, there are always eyes around checking to see which bedroom socket your personal nightlight has been plugged into. Finally, the Governor made no mention of resigning his Governorship, he did resign as Chairman of the GOP Governors Association, Governor Haley Barbour will take over that position. The Governor asked for a zone of privacy for his wife and children. The Governor was on a fast track to a possible nomination for
the presidency, that appears to be out of the question for the moment.
The part about the disappearance for five days without anyone knowing where he was, and who paid for his trips, may be a larger problem than the affair. The clock may be ticking towards the Governor's resignation.

There is a report that a rift is occurring between the Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, and Rafsanjani, the head of the Assembly of Experts, the group of 86 which has the power to remove the supreme leader. It has been reported that Rafsanjani does not have a majority as yet to remove the supreme leader, but there is behind the scenes movement. The woman who was shot and killed on the street, Meda Agha Soltan, has become a martyr for the protesters. Her picture was portrayed on the cover of one of the U. S. magazines. There has been an undeclared state of martial law in Iran by the government. The protesters have been warned that they will face serious consequences if they continue to rally. It is reported that the protesters know they cannot win a battle in the streets, so they are seeking advice on tactical strategy, from people who know how to organize. They do not want U. S help, the change will take months, perhaps years. The Guardian Council has announced that a review showed there was no major fraud in the election, and it will not be annuled.

  • Iran: Protests and Unrest Continue!

The protesters in Iran defied the supreme leader request to not come out on the streets of Iran, they came out on Saturday and again on Sunday. With reports of 10 more people being killed on Saturday and some reports of at least 32 people actually being killed. The protesters are being beaten and sprayed with tear gas according to the few reports coming out of the country. Most news reporters and agencies have been banned fro coverage of the protests. Protesters have come out in the United States as well, in Los Angeles, Washington, D. C., and New York, where people gathered outside the United Nations. The former President, Hashemi Rafsanjani, one of the richest and most powerful men in Iran, has challenged the supreme leader, and on Saturday, his eldest daughter, Faejah Hashemi and four unidentified relatives were arrested. Thefour relatives were reportedly released on Sunday evening, but the daughter was detained. Ms Hashemi reportedly alleged fraud in the election and was called a traitor by some hard-line students. State television also showed Ms Hashemi, 46, speaking out in support of Mir Hossein Mousavi before supporters of Mousavi. Many foreign leaders are speaking out against the government actions against the protesters. President Obama has urged Iran tho halt "all violent and unjust actions against its own people. He said in effect that the United States stands behind all who seek to exercise "universal right to assembly and free speech." German Chancellor Angela Merkel urged Iran anew, to conduct a complete and transparent recount. Israeli Prime Minister Peres applauded Iran's pro-reform protesters, saying the young people should "raise their voice for freedom". England has also called for tolerance on the part of the Iranian government. The arrests of the relatives of Rafanjani is the strongest sign of a serious divide between Iran's ruling clerics, according to AP reports. Rafanjani, 76, is the head of two powerful institutions, the cleric run Assembly of Experts, which has the power to monitor and remove the supreme leader, the country's most powerful figure. The second is the Expediency Council, a body that arbitrates disputes between parliament and the un-elected Guardian Council, which can block legislation. A side note concerning the election process, Iranians brought their own pens to use as there was a report that the supporters of Mousavi were going to be given pens which contained invisible ink.

A New York Times reporter, who had been held by the Taliban, in a compound for seven months, was able to climb over a wall, reportedly with the help of some of his captors, and escape. New York Times Editor, Bill Keller told an interviewer, with his family agreeing to the non-reporting of the incident by the Times, that the paper believed this was the best way to handle the situation. Mr. Keller was able to get other major news agencies to suppress the story. No ransom was paid according to Mr. Keller. He is also not discussing fully the story of the kidnapping, as he says in essence, they would be writing the playbook for the next kidnapping.

The Supreme Leader in Iran spoke at a prayer service, saying that there was no fraud in the election that was held. Also telling the protester that they should stop marching, in essence, telling the if they didn't they could be will be subject to punishment. Those, he said, who encouraged the protesters, will be held responsible and accountable for anything that happens to them. High ranking generals have been detained by the Revolutionary Guards, because they refused to fire on the protesters. At night the protesters have been shouting to each other "God is Great", from the roof tops, as some did in the uprising in 1979. The next 48-72 hours could prove to be a turning point in one direction or the other, more lives could be lost if the protesters decide to ignore the Supreme Leader. Or the their leader Mir Hossein Mousavi, could decide to stand aside, and not risk any more blood shed.

Story of the Day: Continuing Ensign debacle, it sees by reports tat Senator Ensign is changing his story about being blackmailed by his former mistress, and now the story is that the couple was going to take the saga to a television station. Extortion it appears, is a felony, and the Senator being a senator, did not report it and the FBI is not investigating it, as yet. Bigger problem for Senator Ensign, when the woman in question, became his mistress, he doubled her salary, he also increased her salary on a second job she was doing for the National Republican Senatorial Committee, he then hired her son who was paid for research performed. This all appears to be at taxpayer expense and thus the Republican's, who for the most part, because they are so classy, have refrained from making any comment, have been dragged into this. The affair reportedly happened in 2008. "It was the worst thing I have ever done in my life, if there was anything I could take back, that would be it" the Senator is reported to have said. The woman was married to an employee in the Senator's office.
Neither one has worked for the Senator since May 2008. Senator ensign, 51, said he would not mention the name of the campaign aide involved in the affair which reportedly went on for eight months. He described the woman and her husband as being good friends. "Our families were close (understatement?), we caused deep pain to both families, and for that I am sorry". He made it clear that he did not plan to resign. rs. Ensign released a statement, which said in part that "our marriage has become stronger". They have three children, the Senator is the son reportedly of a casino magnate. He has been in the Senate since 2000, and last year he was named Chairman of the Republican Policy Committee, the number four man in the party's leadership. The committee co-ordinates the GOP's legislative efforts in the Senate.
