Today in court, a Judge said that what Bernard Madoff did, scamming billions of dollars from unsuspecting investors, in a Ponzi scheme, was "extra-ordinarily evil". He then proceeded to sentence Mr. Madoff to the maximum sentence that could be imposed on a convicted person. At Mr. Madoff's age, this is in essence a death sentence. The Defense had asked for a twelve year sentence for their client. The Madoff's have also been ordered to turn over their assets to the court, and the government will auction them off. Eleven of his victims spoke at the sentencing.
The infomercial guru, Bob Mays, 50, died suddenly on Sunday. He complained reportedly of a headache to his wife, after being hit on the head during a bumpy airplane ride, possibly from falling luggage. The medical examiner reportedly said that Mr. Mays had heart disease.
The doctor, who administered CPR, on the day he died was interviewed twice by the LAPD. Doctor Conrad Murray, a proclaimed cardiologist, but reportedly un-certified, has said he did not administer any drugs to Michael Jackson the day he was stricken. It has been reported as well, that Mr. Jackson had only pills in his stomach. Prescriptions from multiple doctors were reportedly found in Mr. Jackson's home. Mr. Jackson's three children were given to the parents of Mr. Jackson, under temporary custody, the Judge in case is said to be happy that the children are with the family and are happy playing with the other children in the family. No plans were announced for a memorial service as yet for the super star.
Time magazine will honor Mr. Jackson with a commemorative issue.
The Supreme Court decided today to reverse the lower court decision involving Judge Sonia Sotomayor in the New Haven Connecticut "Ricci" case. The case involved a test for firefighters where the white firefighters passed and all the black firefighters failed, the test was thrown out and the white firefighters were not promoted, they sued. The case was said to have reverse discrimination overtones. More to the point, some law scholars thought the case under Title 7, reflected "discrimination in practice", which is why the lower court through ruled against the white firefighters. It should be noted that there were black firefighters who had passed previous tests and were promoted, this was a new test.
Governor Mark Sanford's alleged mistress reportedly acknowledged the affair with the governor, and said that
the e-mails that were published were indeed from her to Governor Sanford, and that they were obtained by someone hacking into her computer.
GM will build a new fuel efficient automobile in Michigan instead of China. A "Make it in Michigan" campaign had been waged by congresspeople, obtaining thirty-thousand signatures,
to try to persuade GM to build the new car in the states. Fourteen hundred jobs will be saved by the decision. Michigan has an unemployment rate which stands reportedly at 14.1% as of May.
Venus Williams moved into the quarter finals at Wimbledon, after her opponent suffered an injury and had to retire. Ana Ivanovic left the match with the score at 6-1, 0-1 in Williams' favor. Roger Federer moved on as well.
Iran and the United States are said to be negotiating behind closed doors through the Swiss Embassy, regarding Iran's nuclear program.
All of the U.S. military will leave the cities in Iraq tomorrow, most of the troops had left already and moved into the outer areas, they must get permission to return to the cities, from the Iraqi government. There has been an uptick in violence in anticipation of the troops leaving the cities, over two-hundred Iraqis were killed in the last week, according to reports. Most Iraqi people, it is said are happy that the troops are leaving, they think they will be safer.
A military coup occurred in British Honduras, where the democratic President was ousted.
