  • Newsweek: Recession is Over*

Well, we can all breathe a sigh of relief, the recession has technically been declared over. The stock market has been rising to the tune of 38% since its low in March. The free fall of the GDP with a negative of 6%, has ended, but it is a slow movement forward, according to reports. The recession began in December of 2007, and some are saying the end will be decided as being July of this year. That is perhaps the good news, the bad news is that it is a jobless recovery, output in the economy is no0 longer contracting based on economic statistics, but job growth is a lagging indicator and so, with unemployment at a high of 9.5%, and sure to go higher, we are in a jobless recovery. The immense resources put into the system by the government has helped to stabilize the ship. The Federal Reserve has announced it will keep interest rates low, so that will hopefully help those who qualify, refinance their homes to have funds to spend and therefore help push the economy in a positive direction. The housing market is starting to show signs of recovery as well. The existing homes sales report has been up three months in a row. At this time, by many reports, only 15% of the stimulus money is in the system, so further improvement is expected as the monies flow out. The new green jobs, the infrastructure improvements, money to the states, and new energy resources should all have an effect on a rising economy. If the Congress and Senate can put a decent health care bill together, stemming the fraud in medicaid alleged by large drug companies, and address the long term deficit problem, not too much to ask, perhaps, just perhaps, we as a country will be on the road to a healthier nation.

Five Rabbis along with the Mayors of Hoboken, Secaucas, and Ridgefeld Borough, New Jersey were arrested in an undercover operation. The Deputy Mayor of Jersey City, New Jersey was implicated and some twenty other people were charged in the probe. The professor who is black, probably with a ritzy house, was arrested, lead out of his home in handcuffs, with a photographer, who just happened to be present, taking his picture for the front page of Boston newspapers. President Obama was asked about the incident, and said that the professor was a friend of his, and among other things that the policeman was stupid for arresting the man in his own home. We can imagine what the policeman is calling the president after hearing that remark, sorry to say. The policeman on the record said that he would not apologize. We guess not, it was your ego that made you arrest the man in the first place. Have to show people who is in charge here, don't we? Just an opinion, we need policemen, just sensible ones.

  • Sarah, Sarah, Sarah!

Governor Sarah Palin has found herself embroiled in yet another ethics
investigation, which may not be dismissed as the multiple other ethics charges have been so far. An independent investigator has found evidence that Governor Palin may have violated ethics laws by accepting private donations to pay her legal bills. The charge is that she is securing unwarranted benefits and receiving improper gifts through the Alaska Fund Trust, set up by supporters. The practical effect of the ruling may be more financial than anything else, meaning she will probably be assessed a large fine, and not be able to solicit any more money, although the web site is still running. When other ethics charges were dismissed, reportedly, Governor Palin quickly announced that fact, this one she is sitting on.

The Republicans have announced to their supporters, that they are launching an all out effort, influenced by the likes of Bill Crystal and other media types, to kill the health care measures, that are moving through the Senate and Congress. Isn't that special, what kind caring, people?

President Obama is in touch with liberal bloggers, in a campaign to get them to contact members of Congress, pressuring them to pass the health care bill in a timely manner.

The Federal Reserve Chief, Ben Bernanke, has stated that the economy is improving slowly, and that they will keep interest rates near zero for a long time.

President Obama made yet another speech promoting the need to pass health care reform, some of his points were:
People will have insurance protection, if they change jobs, lose their job, get sick, or have a pre-existing condition.

There will be a public option available.
Prevention and wellness programs will be emphasized.
There will be out-of-pocket spending limits.
Costs will be cut, but quality will be improved.
Insurance companies and the AMA are supporting the reforms.
But from all reports, the cost factor is the main obstacle. President
Obama has said in the past and recently, that the cost of doing nothing is worse than the cost of any change, or improvement, in essence. He also has said, hard choices have to be made to give the American people the health care they deserve.

Then we go over to C Street in Washington, D. C., to a house, where Republicans gather and some live. It is a type of mission, where the men have prayer service, and read the Bible. The problem seems to be
that many of the men have been outed in recent weeks as being involved in adulterous affairs. Those include Senator John Ensign, Governor Mark Sanford, and former Republican Representative Chip Pickering, who supposedly took care of his business with his mistress in the house itself. His wife made this known in a lawsuit in divorce proceedings, when she sued her husband's mistress for destroying her marriage and her husband's career. The house is listed as a church and is tax-exempt. The men, in a book called "The Family" are described as a group who talk to each other, and absolve each other

  • CIT: Next Bankruptcy Filing?

CIT Group Inc., may be headed for bankruptcy within a few days. The commercial lending company is hitting hard ties, and has been in talks with the Federal Reserve, the Treasury Department and the FDIC for an additional cash infusion. The talks broke down, the company tried to induce its debt holders to give them the funds to no avail It has been said that the debt holders believe the economy is on the rise, and are not interested at the moment. This refusal by the government to give CIT the 2.3 billion requested, is a virtual line in the sand being drawn by the Obama administration, as to how much money they are still willing to give to prop up failing institutions. The relative small size of CIT may also have bearing on the decision not to provide the additional cash. There may not be much of a ripple effect if and when CIT files for bankruptcy, because of its small size. The company had 75.7 billion in assets as of March 31, with 7.4 billion in debt, due in the first quarter of 2010. CIT had already received 2.3 billion in bailout money in December of 2008. A bankruptcy would mean that CIT shareholders would be wiped out and the government would lose its 2.3 billion dollar stake in the company. Many small business borrowers, reportedly, could be greatly effected. Reports are that CIT will file for bankruptcy before trading on Thursday.

For the second day of hearings from the Senate Judiciary Committee, for her nomination to the Supreme Court, Judge Sotomayor sat listening to the continuous questions about he statement that a "Latino woman would have better decision making qualities than a white man" in essence. Finally the judge gave in and stated that it was bad what she said.

Mostly the Republican Senators kept hitting her with the charge that she would be biased in her decisions, she swung back, saying she would uphold the law, if confirmed, as she has in her past cases. • Sonia Sotomayor: Facing the Jury!

Today starts the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, for Judge Sonia Sotomayor. The Chairman, Senator Patrick Leahy, said in opening remarks that her story was an American story. Senator Jeff Sessions, ranking Republican member, said that Judge Sotomayor was "out of the main stream of legal thinking". He said this even though after a review of 1,200 of Judge Sotomayor's legal decisions, the Bar Association said she was not an activist judge, and rated her over 90% range for following the law as it is written, and being a middle of the road jurist. Never mind the record, the Republicans appear to be gearing for a fight, so no one who has empathy for human beings, especially a Latino woman, with more experience reportedly than any other nominee at this point of their nomination, also an excellent scholar, would be given the chance to sit on the Supreme Court of the United States of America. Judge Sotomayor met with 89 of the 100 Senators who hold office, winning over most of the according to reports. Therefore, unless the floor drops out from under the judge during the hearings, which will probably conclude Thursday or Friday, she should be sent out of committee with a decent vote, and confirmed by the Senate with over 70 votes, maybe more. The woman is qualified and smart and will be a great addition to the mostly all boys club. Thank goodness for change, it's a good thing.

He is launching an investigation into the situation. Senator Diane Feinstein has said that she feels it was illegal. A decision has to be made regarding congressional investigation into the matter. • Palin Surprise! Resigns as Governor!

Big surprise fro the Alaskan Governor, on Friday, with a rambling press conference, Governor Sarah Palin shocked a lot of Republicans and Democrats by stepping down from the position of Governor of Alaska. She will be turning over the governorship to her Lt. Governor Sean Parnell, who is said to be a strong Palin supporter. No one seems to be able to determine just why she is quitting in mid-term, if she has aspirations to run for the Republican nomination for president in 2012. As many states are suffering budget deficits, and economic constrictions from the recession, so is the state of Alaska. Many felt the best thing she could done would be to improve the state of affairs in Alaska and complete her term in office as governor. Ed Rollins, a Republican strategist, said this was the worst thing she could have done. Others think she is freeing herself up to write her seven figure book, raise money for the GOP, garnering favors for the future and going on the speaking circuit to raise her profile, for whatever she plans to do in the future. We feel like some others do, that there is another shoe to drop, it seems a little like a forced situation, with an implied threat of prosecution of some sort, could be wrong, but?
