Today starts the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, for Judge Sonia Sotomayor. The Chairman, Senator Patrick Leahy, said in opening remarks that her story was an American story. Senator Jeff Sessions, ranking Republican member, said that Judge Sotomayor was "out of the main stream of legal thinking". He said this even though after a review of 1,200 of Judge Sotomayor's legal decisions, the Bar Association said she was not an activist judge, and rated her over 90% range for following the law as it is written, and being a middle of the road jurist. Never mind the record, the Republicans appear to be gearing for a fight, so no one who has empathy for human beings, especially a Latino woman, with more experience reportedly than any other nominee at this point of their nomination, also an excellent scholar, would be given the chance to sit on the Supreme Court of the United States of America. Judge Sotomayor met with 89 of the 100 Senators who hold office, winning over most of the according to reports. Therefore, unless the floor drops out from under the judge during the hearings, which will probably conclude Thursday or Friday, she should be sent out of committee with a decent vote, and confirmed by the Senate with over 70 votes, maybe more. The woman is qualified and smart and will be a great addition to the mostly all boys club. Thank goodness for change, it's a good thing.

The Congress is totally abuzz about a semi-revelation that Vice-President Cheney set up a covert operation of sorts in 2001 until Leon Panetta took over as Director of the CIA, and ended it. The plan reportedly was that the CIA target Al-Quida leaders for assassination outside the military, and not to inform Congress or the Intelligence Committees about any of the details. When Leon Panetta took over the CIA, he reportedly was not informed about the program. He learned of its existence in June, and shut it down the next day. He is launching an investigation into the situation. Senator Diane Feinstein has said that she feels it was illegal. A decision has to be made regarding congressional investigation into the matter. The supposed reason for not informing Congress was to prevent leaks. Darth Vadar at work again.
