Well, we can all breathe a sigh of relief, the recession has technically been declared over. The stock market has been rising to the tune of 38% since its low in March. The free fall of the GDP with a negative of 6%, has ended, but it is a slow movement forward, according to reports. The recession began in December of 2007, and some are saying the end will be decided as being July of this year. That is perhaps the good news, the bad news is that it is a jobless recovery, output in the economy is no0 longer contracting based on economic statistics, but job growth is a lagging indicator and so, with unemployment at a high of 9.5%, and sure to go higher, we are in a jobless recovery. The immense resources put into the system by the government has helped to stabilize the ship. The Federal Reserve has announced it will keep interest rates low, so that will hopefully help those who qualify, refinance their homes to have funds to spend and therefore help push the economy in a positive direction. The housing market is starting to show signs of recovery as well. The existing homes sales report has been up three months in a row. At this time, by many reports, only 15% of the stimulus money is in the system, so further improvement is expected as the monies flow out. The new green jobs, the infrastructure improvements, money to the states, and new energy resources should all have an effect on a rising economy. If the Congress and Senate can put a decent health care bill together, stemming the fraud in medicaid alleged by large drug companies, and address the long term deficit problem, not too much to ask, perhaps, just perhaps, we as a country will be on the road to a healthier nation.
