S. House of Representatives: Passes Health Care Reform Bill!

On a historical Saturday night in the U. S. Congress, two-hundred and nineteen Democrats and one Republican voted to pass the health care reform bill. The final total 220-215 to make the bill a law. House speaker Nancy Pelosi praised the leadership of the committee chairs in completing the remarkable passage of the bill. The bill would take away an insurance companies ability to refuse coverage for people with pre-existing conditions, also the companies will not be able to take away coverage if you get sick. Young people will be able to stay on their parents insurance plan until they are 27 years of age, the doughnut holes in coverage for seniors will be closed, the public option will be included in the plan, people will be able to chose the best health care plan for themselves. The cost at this point is reported at 1.1 trillion dollars, the plan will now provide health coverage for an additional 36 million Americans. The AARP and the American Medical Association backed the plan. The next hurdle will be the Senate where Senator "No Go" Joe stands at the gate. There may just be too strong a wave for Senator Lieberman to hold up the passage of this historical bill. We shall see. Congratulations to Speaker Pelosi and the Democrats for having the backbone to move forward on behalf of the American people.

Karzai Wins!

The run-off election, in Afghanistan was canceled, after President Karzai's opponent, Dr. Abdullah Abdullah withdrew from the race on Sunday. He withdrew, reports say because he felt the election had been corrupt. But many say he withdrew because he knew he would not win. The election commission then canceled the run-off election, giving Mr. Karzai
another five year term as President of Afghanistan. President Obama acknowledged the election of Mr. Karzai. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton had said that the United States government would support the elected president prior to the run-off election. President Obama is still deliberating with advisers, as to what the U. S. strategy will be in that country and how many troops will be sent to Afghanistan in 2010.

In New Jersey, Governor Corzine and Mr. Christie, his Republican opponent are 5 points apart with the Republican leading. In New York's 23rd Congressional District, the Republican candidate, Dede Scazzafavi was forced out by Republicans supporting the Conservative candidate, Doug Hoffman and by
problems reportedly raising money. She dropped out of the race over the weekend and was convinced to support the democratic candidate, Bill Owens, she even made robo calls, for Mr. Owens, asking her supporters to vote for him. The race is 41% for Hoffman, 36% for Owens with 18%
undecided, as of today.

Senator Joe Lieberman said on Sunday's Face the Nation, he is still planning to do everything he can to block the passage of the health care reform bill, if it contains the public option. He further said on the show, that nothing would be better the passing the bill with the public option. Wonder if the two-million dollars plus, he received in campaign funds from the insurance companies, has anything to do with his decision? Or perhaps the fact that his wife sits on the board of one of the largest insurance companies in the country. You think?

The Democrats in, charge of the Senate, by virtue of their majority membership need 60 votes, to pass the final bill and stop any Republican filibuster. Then along comes Joe, Senator Joseph Lieberman, Independent from Connecticut, has announced that he will block the bill, not allowing it to come to the floor for vote, if it contains the public option. Why? Various reasons voiced by different news analysts speculate that Mr. Lieberman is interested in giving the insurance companies support to continue the fleecing of the public. No verification, but odds are Mr. Lieberman has received funds from insurance companies for his campaigns and wants to continue that relationship in the future. Just a thought, if Senator Lieberman follows through with his promise to join the Republicans in a filibuster, thus giving other Democrats a reason to follow his lead and destroy the opportunity to have a reform bill, he should be stripped of his Homeland Security Chairmanship immediately, and a viable candidate should be found and groomed to run against him in his next election. He does not deserve to be in the Senate. Just a thought. Other unprintable words come to mind.

S. National Swine Flu Emergency Declared!

President Barack Obama, declared a national swine flu emergency, on Friday evening in the United States. Mr. Obama stated that the 2009 H1N1 swine flu pandemic continues to evolve. Though reportedly hard to verify, it is thought that 20,000 people are hospitalized in the U. S.
There have been, as reported, 1,000 deaths linked to the virus. Almost 100 deaths have reportedly been children. The seasonal flu peak is usually between late November and early March. The emergency designation eases the implementation of emergency plans by treatment facilities. U. S. officials said last week, according to reports, that swine flu activity was widespread in 46 states. Health officials say the infections are now comparable, to peak flu season levels. This declaration, removes bureaucratic hurdles, allowing sick patients, to receive treatment more quickly and gives health-care providers, more flexibility in providing it. If you have a very high fever, cough and any of the other listed symptoms below, call your doctor, or get to the hospital. You should not go work or school. This is a very dangerous virus, and should be take very seriously. Children do not have strong immune systems to fight this virus and reportedly, it attacks their lungs. Older people with other illnesses should be careful as well. Be very vigilant.

Typical symptoms of the swine flu:
Runny nose and sneezing
This bill being called the "Baucus Bill", does not contain a public option. There is a mandate that requires everyone, in essence, to obtain health insurance, or face a penalty if they don't. There are supposed to be some exceptions to the penalties and government subsidies to help the people with low incomes. One Republican, Senator Olympia Snowe, voted with the Democrats, to move the bill out of committee. All five of the committee bills must now be assimilated for a final bill, then combined with the House bill, which contains a public option. It will be put up for a final vote by the Senate and the House, and moved on to the Presidents desk for signing. Today, another Republican Senator, Susan Collins said she could support the bill, but it needed a lot more work. Other Republicans may find the public pressure too much to withstand, and vote for the bill in its final form, regardless of their parties wishes, that they keep President Obama from achieving a monumental goal of a overhaul of a disastrous health care system.

Rush Limbaugh's words are coming back to haunt him, as he endeavors, along with the St. Louis Blues owner, Dave Checkett, to purchase the
St. Louis Rams. The Commissioner, Roger Goodell reportedly said, that the conservative commentator's "divisive" comments would not be tolerated from any NFL insiders. Twenty-four of the thirty-two league teams must approve the sale. Colts owner Jim Irsay publicly vowed to vote against Limbaugh. Atlanta Falcon's owner, Arthur Blank echoed the commissioner's words that Limbaugh's inappropriate, incendiary and insensitive words do damage and it's something they do not need. The
league and the union are said to have similar stances as the commissioner. Some black players say they would not play for him. The Reverand's Al Sharpton and Jessie Jackson are lobbying the owners of the teams to reject Limbaugh's bid. Some black players are saying they would not play for the man. This all goes back as well, to Limbaugh's remarks about the Philadelphia Eagles quarterback, Donavon McNabb, who is black, and his feeling that McNabb was not a good player, but was being kept because of other reasons. He was terminated from ESPN as a sports announcer, for his less than tactful, stupid remarks. But in the end, my question, will money talk?? Breaking news: Money did not talk loud enough, Rush was dropped from the bidding process. He will not be able to brag about his team, this time anyway.

He becomes only the third sitting president, behind Presidents Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson, to be a recipient of the Nobel prize. The spokesperson for the committee, said they were giving the President the award for his efforts at reaching out to all, to bring peace to the world, for trying to rid the world of nuclear arms, and his efforts towards ending climate change. The President was told early this morning, and he spoke from the rose garden, saying that he wasn't sure that he deserved the award, that he was humbled by it. He also said that he was accepting on behalf of all those, who are working toward having peace in the world. That we must all work toward solving our global problems, in essence that one country or one person cannot do it alone. It must be a joint effort to rid the world of nuclear arms, and improve the planet to try to reduce global warming. He said he was making a call to arms, for all people to help to end suffering and pain of all those on the planet. History making in itself, hopefully this recognition will help the President
rally those who are in opposition to his effort, to bring health care to as many people as possible in the United States, to make a positive change in the climate change battle, before we are all in more serious trouble, regarding the earth's resources than we are now. Congratulations Mr. President, we applaud you and your efforts, may you have great success, as you go forward.

He worked at the Times for over 30 years, he was a conservative, who once was a speechwriter for President Richard Nixon. In the past Mr. Safire spent a lot of time accusing the Clinton's of various "scandals", which were never borne out by the facts, according to reports. That did not seem to stop him, he just left what he said hanging out there and moved on, as one reporter stated. He also said that Saddam Hussein was linked to the 9/11 attackers, the 9/11 Commission Report discredited this reporting. Mr. Safire will be missed greatly in his community of friends.

Iran test fired short range and long range missiles in a matter of a few days. Sending a message that they are ready for any potential attack on their country. All of this comes after a secret underground nuclear weapon development facility was reportedly discovered and revealed by U.S. Intelligence. British, French and U.S. leaders, with Germany being in accord, held a joint press conference on Friday of last week to announce the discovery, which had been under surveillance, according to Secretary of Defense Robert Gates for well over a year. Iran has according to the press conference, until December to allow inspection of the facility and to cease their building of nuclear weapons. A summit will be held this week with Iran in the mix, but Iran officials state they are not prepared to discuss nuclear weapons at the meeting. They did however say, according to reports, that they would allow inspectors into the facility at some future date.

President Obama's liberal base, it has been reported wants him to draw down the troops and end the mission in a set time frame, within a short period of time. The Republicans want the president to maintain the troops, send more, from where, who knows, and keep fighting the Taliban. very interesting and very surprising. On Saturday, Kim Cljisters, 2005 U. S. Champion and the 2008 U.S. Champion, Serena Williams, played each other for a spot in the finals against Caroline Wozniacki. Cljisters won the first set and was on her way to winning the second, best two out of three set for the match. The score was two points away for Clijisters on a break point chance against Williams, the lines woman called a controversial foot fault. Serena had earlier banged her racket and received a warning, after the foot fault call, Serena started to scream at the woman, waving her racket at her, and saying a few choice words which rhyme with bucking, describing what she would do
with the tennis ball. The chair umpire called the woman over to ask her what Serena had said, two officials came out as well. When everything was settled, Serena received a second point against her because of the earlier warning and the match went to Kim Cljisters. Serena initially
said she had no remorse, but upon second thought, she apologized the next day to all, she and her sister played doubled for the doubles championship and won. Serena was fined ten thousand dollars. Kim Cljisters of Begium, went on to win the womens singles championship against Wozniacki of Denmark, pocketing one-million, six hundred thousand dollars. The next day, Monday, Roger Federer, five time U. S. Open Champion, played Juan Martin Del Potro of Argentina, a 20 year old
underdog who took out Raphael Nadal, the number three player in the world. The match went to five sets, with Del Potro playing remarkable come back tennis. He won the match in an upset of the number one mens
The International Association of Athletics Federation, had the young lady take blood, chromosome and gynecological examinations. The speed with which she won her 800 meter race caused a stir, which officials are trying to resolve, according to reports. The results will be released in November. The IAAF officials stated that the gender verification test results will be examined by a group of medical experts. A final decision will be made at the next meeting of the council in Monaco, November 20-21. Caster Semenya was accused of not being female. The IAAF would not confirm or deny Australian newspaper reports that the recently crowned women's 800 meter champion has male and female sexual organs. An Australian newspaper reported on in its Friday edition, that medical reports indicate she has no ovaries but rather has internal male testes, which are producing large amounts of testosterone. She has not cheated, IAAF spokesman, Nick Davies reportedly said, "legally, if she proves to have an advantage because of the male hormones, it would be extremely difficult to strip her of her medal, since she has not cheated. This is not a doping offense. She was naturally made that way, and she was entered by the team in Berlin and accepted by the IAAF". The father insists his daughter is a female and his little girl. But!

The votes are being counted in the Afghanistan presidential election, with a possibility of President Karzai receiving over 50% of the votes cast. But in the other corner, a U. N. commission is ordering a total recount of the votes, due to what has been called, "clear and convincing
evidence", of election fraud. An observer said that the questionable votes were in the areas of Afghanistan where it was too dangerous for the people to vote and those were the areas where the president had his strongest support. So it has been assumed that the Karzai supporters were trying to make up the difference for those who did not vote but wanted to vote for the president. A recount will take place according to the latest reports, the outcome to be determined. If the recount does not provide a clear victor, then will a new election be in the works? We await the answer.

The "gang of six", three Democrats and three Republicans are meeting to try to work out a cohesive plan for health care reform. Their plan is reportedly going to be introduced today, before the president speaks tonight. Reportedly the proposed plan does not contain a public option. Lawrence O'Donnell remarked on MSNBC that he does not think that the Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi will request that the public option be a part of the reform package. My question, what then is the reason for the reform? Just end it now and let the insurance companies, drug companies and the Republicans mark up a victory, and allow the scalping of the public to continue, the costs of health care keep rising and the entire U. S. health care system keeps moving toward collapse. Great job guys.

President Obama comes out tonight after his speech to school children of America, on Tuesday, to stay in school and set goals. The speech was criticized by many, out of some belief that the children were going to be exposed to political rhetoric, wrong! He will now tackle health care reform in a speech at 8 p.m., before a joint session of Congress, to try to get Congress and the Senate to help the country, help itself by reducing the cost of rising health care through providing competition for the insurance companies with a public option health care plan for
consumers.

More questions are arising regarding the release of the Lockerbie bomber. The Scottish Minister who made the final decision to release the prisoner, reportedly has a brother whose company has an interest in obtaining oil contracts from Libya. This information has stirred up more questions as to whether or not a deal was made behind the scenes. Really?

S. Open Tennis: Top Seeds Falling Fast!

At Flushing Meadows in New York, where the 2009 U. S. Open Tennis Tournament is being held, the seeded players are dropping all over the place. A Cinderella story is also emerging, in the form of 17 year old Melanie Oudin, one of a set of twins, out of the state of Georgia. As of today Andy Roddick, James Blake, Layton Hewitt, Venus Williams, Maria Sharapova, Nadia Petrova and the number one women's player in the world, Dinara Safina have been eliminated from the competition. Only one American male John Isner, who eliminated Andy Roddick is still standing. If he loses today, this will reportedly be the first time in the history of the U. S. Open that no American male has made it to the quarter-finals. The charming, young Melanie Oudin is being cheered on as she keeps eliminating top seeded players, one after another. Her boyfriend told her to " believe", she said and had the word written on the tennis shoes she wears. So far he has eliminated Maria Sharapova, Nadia Petrova and one other top seed early on. Her twin sister along with her other family members were in the stand today when, she lost the first set to Petrova, as she typically starts her matches, and then came back to win the match, 1-6, 7-6, 6-3. Her tennis playing is beyond her years and she has a very good chance of being in the finals. When you watch her play, she appears to be in a zone, with confidence beyond her years. She is already the youngest women's player in some 10 years to make it to the quarter-finals. The excitement is growing, she may just win it all, but if not, it's an amazing show of tennis excellence. You gotta believe.

Reportedly Ms Leibovitz, must pay back a twenty-four million dollar loan by Tuesday. Art Capital Group, a New York company, that issues short-term loans against fine and decorative arts and real estate, sued her in late July for breach of contact. Some experts say filing for bankruptcy reorganization could be the best option for Leibovitz, 59, who has put up as collateral, her three historic Greenwich Village townhouses, an upstate property and work. She bought two of the townhouses in 2002 and did extensive renovations to combine them into one property, spurring protests from historic preservationists, and a fifteen million dollar lawsuit by a neighbor. A reorganization filing would suspend all litigation against Leibovitz and place her finances under the protection of a federal judge. Last year Leibovitz put up her homes and the copyright to every picture she has ever taken or will ever take as collateral to secure the loan. In addition to her mortgage, court records show she piled up years of federal, state and city lien judgments from vendors, for unpaid bills, all presumably now satisfied with the twenty-four million dollars she borrowed.

S. 9th Circuit Court: Ashcroft Wrong in Detaining Suspect!

A three judge panel of the U. S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, ruled against former Attorney General John Ashcroft, saying that he could be sued in the case where a suspect was wrongfully detained, as a material witness after 9/11. The panel ruled that the government's improper use of material witnesses after 9/11, was "repugnant to the Constitution and a painful reminder of some of the most ignominious chapters of our national history." The court found that a man who was detained as a witness in a federal terrorism case, can sue Ashcroft for allegedly violating his constitutional rights. Adullah al-Kidd, a U. S. citizen and former University of Idaho student, filed the lawsuit against Ashcroft and other officials in 2005, claiming his civil rights were violated when he was detained as a material witness for two weeks in 2003. Al-Kidd said the investigation and detention not only caused him to lose a scholarship to study in Saudi Arabia, but cost him employment opportunities and caused his marriage to fall apart. He argued that his detention exemplified an illegal government policy created by Ashcroft to arrest and detain people, particularly Muslim men and those of Arab
decent, as material witnesses, if the government suspected them of a crime, but had no evidence to charge them. Ashcroft had asked the judge to dismiss the matter, saying that because his position at the Department of Justice was prosecutorial, he was entitled to absolute immunity from the lawsuit. The court said that al-Kidd's
claims plausibly suggest that Ashcroft purposely used the material witness statute to detain suspects who he wished to investigate and detain, preventively. Not because there was evidence that they may have committed a crime, but merely because the government wished to investigate them for possible wrong doing, or to prevent them from having contact with others in the outside world. The Department of Justice may now ask the full 9th U. S. Circuit Court of Appeals to reconsider the ruling by the three-judge panel, may appeal to the U. S. Supreme Court or it could allow the lawsuit to revert back to Boise's U. S. District Court . If the case goes back to the lower court, the government will likely have to comply with al-Kidd's discovery requests--
releasing documents and files that it has previously maintained were highly confidential and that could pose a threat to national security. Al-Kidd's attorney, Lee Gilernt of the American Civil Liberties Union, said the ruling by the three-judge panel had implications reaching far beyond the government's actions in detaining material witnesses post-9/11. Judge Milan D. Smith , Jr., one of the three judges, thought the actions by Ashcroft were "repugnant to the Constitution".
The White House must take back the message with a clear outline of what will be in the reform plan. S. Senate, Ted Kennedy, Has Passed!

For forty-seven years, Ted Kennedy worked hard in the Senate for the underdog. Those he felt should have a chance at an education, livable wages, health care, jobs and the right to vote in the country in which they lived. Late Tuesday night, just before mid-night, Ted Kennedy, the senior Senator of Massachusetts and champion of the people lost his battle with brain cancer. He was surrounded by his loving family, in Hyannis Port, Massachusetts. Senator Kennedy took his brother, John F.Kennedy's, seat in the Senate when JFK won the presidency, he kept that seat for forty-seven years. He suffered through having a broken back in a plane crash, where he almost died. His reputation suffered when a young woman died in a drowning incident. But he fought back and applied himself in working to change the country for the better. He had a hand in the Voting Rights Act, the Civil Rights Act, the Immigration Bill, the Medicare changes, the Education Bill to give more young people grants for college, the Women's Rights Act, and on and on. He was not destined to be president of the United States, but in a way, Senator Kennedy influenced more domestic policy changes than most presidents have ever done. He endorsed Senator Barack Obama over Senator Hillary Clinton, in the 2008 primary, saying it was time for a new generation of political leadership, it was time for Barack Obama. His speeches saying "for those whose cares are our concern, the work goes on, the cause still lives, and the dream will never die" were tremendous rallying cries for the Democrats. When he endorsed Senator Barack Obama, he said it was time for change and he felt Senator Obama represented that change.
Senator Kennedy was diagnosed with brain cancer in May, 2008.
He is survived by his second wife of seventeen years, Vicki, his three
children and seven grandchildren. One of the greatest liberal politicians in the history of the United States government. A man most say who knew how to work together with those in the Senate, a fighter, a champion for those without. A void has been created in the Senate and we need another gladiator, as someone called him, to pick up the sword and shield, and go forward to fight the good fight, the cause of his life as Senator Kennedy called it. Senator Edward Moore Kennedy was 77 years old. He died one year to the day when he made the speech in Denver, Colorado endorsing Senator Barack Obama. It would be a huge understatement to say that Senator Kennedy will be missed. A giant of a man has left the stage, let the curtain come down slowly. May God bless the entire family and all of his friends. The funeral will reportedly be at Our Lady of Perpetual Help of Basilica on Saturday, of this week.

The man is suffering from terminal cancer and reportedly has less than three months to live. He had served eight years in jail for his crime. The personal airplane of the President of Libya flew the man from Scotland to Libya, where he received a hero's welcome. The relatives of some of the 259 people who perished on that flight, were very upset that the United States did not do more to keep the man imprisoned. Some were reportedly under the belief that England had made a deal with Libya to receive ore of their oil in exchange for the release of the prisoner from the Scottish prison. President Obama said today that it was a mistake, that the man was released that the man should be placed under house arrest in Libya.

Friends and relatives say there has not been any change in Senator Kennedy's condition, he just wants the state to have two senators to speak for the people of Massachusetts at such a critical time. Reports are that the letter Senator Kennedy sent to the governor had a date of July 2009.

Through the eighteen holes, Tiger stayed ahead of the other players, but just barely. Y E. Yang, who was paired with Tiger, but not intimidated, appeared cool and under control, maybe some would say, because he had nothing to lose. Yang made an eagle at the 14th hole, and kept playing with a steady pace, while Tiger was playing somewhat unevenly and missing birdie after birdie. Yang took the lead and Tiger started to drop more strokes until Yang finally won the tournament with a three stroke lead over Tiger, finishing with -8 to Tiger's -5. This was a great day for Yang, who had never won a major title. He is 37 years old and the first Asian male to win a PGA major title.

The White House is launching a web site to try to counter the mis-information and deliberately false information that is being put out about the health care reform potential bill. One such rumor that there will be death panels, which is totally bizarre. There will be reimbursement for people who want to have a discussion with their doctors, as people have had in the past, but were not reimbursed for the time spent by the doctor, when a patient is very ill. The status quo crowd is hard at work trying to keep things as they are, so that the money will keep flowing. This involves both Republicans and Democrats, and we wonder why the United States is the only country without all Americans having access to health care.
